  7.                  INSTALLING SEAGATE'S RLL PAIRED SOLUTIONS
  8.  
  9.                           I. INTRODUCTION
  10.  
  11.  Seagate's ST11R controller and RLL drive package offers a complete RLL
  12.  Paired  Solution.  This  section  of  the  database will assist you in the
  13.  installation of your Seagate RLL drive  and controller.  Before beginning,
  14.  please read through the entire section.
  15.  
  16.  Seagate provides partitioning software pre-loaded on the drive for drives
  17.  over 32 formatted Mb.
  18.  
  19.  
  20.  BEFORE YOU BEGIN...
  21.  
  22.  - Seagate RLL Paired Program disc drives are shipped to you already
  23.  formatted with a small DOS partition. The programs necessary to install
  24.  the drive are contained in that partition. You must supply the DOS* system
  25.  programs. You will be prompted with display screens at each step in the
  26.  installation process. Paired Program drives with formatted capacities
  27.  greater than 32-Mb are shipped with software to access multiple
  28.  partitions or partitions larger than 32 Mb.

  32.  - REFER  TO  THE  MATRIX  IN  TABLE  1 FOR SEAGATE DRIVES SUPPORTED BY THE
  33.  ST11R.

  35.  - A printable README file, containing supplemental installation
  36.  information, is included with the installation software and is accessible
  37.  via the DOS system commands.
  38.  
  39.  - The ST11R is designed to be installed only with drives certified for
  40.  RLL (2,7) data encoding. Use with Seagate drives designed for MFM-only
  41.  data encoding will void your drive warranty. Even though an MFM drive may
  42.  initially format correctly with an RLL controller, performance may
  43.  degrade over time. Seagate assumes no liability for installation of an
  44.  RLL controller with an MFM-certified disc drive.
  45.  
  46.  - Seagate disc drives do not require any preventive maintenance. The
  47.  head/disc assembly is sealed and does not contain any user-serviceable
  48.  components. Do not tamper with the sealed top cover. Doing so will void
  49.  your warranty.
  50.  
  51.  - When transporting or shipping a drive, controller or system, please
  52.  ensure that they are correctly packed in the original container and
  53.  shipped via an air-ride carrier.
  54.  
  55.  -  Installation Warning: Do not touch the board components or connectors
  56.  without observing static-discharge precautions. A grounded wrist-strap is
  57.  preferred. If that is unavailable, ground yourself by touching the metal
  58.  chassis of the system before handling any components. Do not unpack the
  59.  components until you are ready to install them in the system.

  66.  -  Do not install the ST11R controller and apply power without first
  67.  removing the rubber strips from all connectors on the controller. These
  68.  strips are conductive. Failure to observe this warning will void the
  69.  controller's warranty and can cause serious problems in your system.

  72.  ST11R Controller and Drive Compatibility

  74.  The ST11R supports up to two (2) of the following drives:

  89.  Usable cylinders are reduced by:
  90.  
  91.  a) One (1) cylinder for drive geometry and defect information.
  92.  
  93.  b) One (1) cylinder for diagnostic area.
  94.  
  95.  c) One or more cylinders for alternate tracks. Alternate track assignment
  96.  is only made if defects involve more than one sector on a track. Single
  97.  sector defects are compensated for within the track on which they occur.
  98.  Alternate track assignment is only made when installing a drive through
  99.  the BIOS (e.g.,DEBUG,-G=C800:5) or with the INSTALLR installation program
  100.  (see Section IV.).

  104.  II. ST11R Controller Setup
  105.  
  106.  1) Remove the ST11R from the protective covering and pull the conductive
  107.  rubber strips from between the pins at the J1, J2 and J3 headers. These
  108.  strips provide static-discharge protection during transit. FAILURE TO
  109.  REMOVE BEFORE INSTALLATION CAN CAUSE SERIOUS PROBLEMS IN YOUR CONTROLLER
  110.  AND SYSTEM.
  111.  
  112.  2) Configure the ST11R:
  113.  
  114.  C8000h is the default BIOS address. If there is a board already installed
  115.  at this address in you system, use the jumpers provided to change to
  116.  another address. Locations A and B are the two pins toward the front of
  117.  the system and D and C are the two pins toward the back of the system.
  118.  Refer to the documentation provided with your system  and other peripheral
  119.  devices to determine if there is an address conflict.  See Table I below.

  126.  The ST11R has four possible starting addresses:

  137.  When installing the ST11R in a system that does not contain any other
  138.  hard disc controllers, all jumpers should be removed from the BIOS PROM
  139.  address jumper. The ST11R is shipped with the correct configuration for
  140.  one hard disc controller.
  141.  
  142.  When installing the ST11R in a system with the Seagate STO1 SCSI Host
  143.  Adaptor, the ST11R must  be configured  at a  lower BIOS  address than the
  144.  ST01.
  145.  
  146.  When installing the ST11R in a system already containing a hard disc
  147.  controller, the ST11R must be jumpered at a higher BIOS address than the
  148.  other controller. If you are not sure of the other controller's address,
  149.  try one of the higher addresses for the ST11R (e.g.,D8OOOh or E0000h).

  152.  3). The J5 header on the ST11R may be used to provide disc drive power
  153.  for systems lacking auxiliary power connectors. See your Dealer for
  154.  cabling. Note: Some early configurations of the ST11R may not include the
  155.  J5 header.

  157.  J5 is pinned out as follows:

  167.  Note: Pin 1 is toward the from and top of the system and also indicated by
  168.  a square solder through pad on the ST11R.

  171.  III. Drive Configuration And Installation
  172.  
  173.  Prior to installation, rest the drive on a padded anti-static surface;
  174.  never on an unprotected hard surface.
  175.  
  176.  Do not touch the board components or connectors without observing static-
  177.  discharge precautions. A grounded wrist-strap is preferred. If that is not
  178.  available, ground yourself by  touching the  metal chassis  of your system
  179.

  184.  before handling any components.

  186.  VERIFY THAT THE POWER IS OFF. Remove the top cover from your system.
  187.  Access to the top cover screws is via the back of the system. Save the
  188.  screws.
  189.  
  190.  1) Drive Select Jumpers:
  191.  
  192.  2) Installation of one drive requires a jumper at its Drive Select 1
  193.  position. Note: Drive select 1 is selected by shorting the 2 pins closest
  194.  to where the 20 pin connector plugs into the drive.  With one exception,
  195.  noted  in  bullet  4  below,  the  second drive must have its Drive Select
  196.  jumper at the DS2 position.  Drive select 2 is one set  of pins  over from
  197.  the drive select 1 position.

  199.  Note: Check that there also is a jumper installed at position 7 on the
  200.  Drive Select header. There should be only two jumpers installed at the
  201.  Drive Select header.
  202.  
  203.  3) Drive Resistor Termination Packs:
  204.  
  205.  If you are installing a single drive, the resistor termination pack must
  206.  remain installed. If you are installing two drives, remove the pack from
  207.  the drive connected at the middle of the 34 pin cable.
